Vallée de Ferney, a protected natural heritage

The Vallée de Ferney stretches across the south-eastern slopes of Mauritius, in the Bambous mountains, about 30 minutes from Mauritius airport.

Set up at the end of 2006 by the estate’s owners, in partnership with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and local authorities, the reserve is managed by La Vallée de Ferney Conservation Trust. It preserves one of the last areas of Mauritian endemic forest, an ecosystem that has become rare after centuries of sugar cane farming and land clearing. Every trail offers a glimpse of what the island looked like before the first European settlers arrived.

The valley is also home to several endemic species on the road to recovery, including the Mauritius kestrel, saved at the last minute in the 1970s, when only a handful of birds remained in the wild.

Observant visitors may also spot the pink pigeon and the echo parakeet, both reintroduced into the valley. A nursery of endemic plants supports the reforestation of the site, a cornerstone of this conservation work.

What to do at Vallée de Ferney?

The site can be explored on foot or on a guided tour, depending on how much time you have and how immersive you want the experience to be. Here are the experiences to add to your plans, to combine with the other gems of the south-east.

Hiking trails and the 4×4 tour

Several options let you discover the valley:

  • Follow the marked trails, from the easy 5 km route to more demanding loops, for an immersive hike through the endemic forest.
  • Choose the guided 4×4 tour, ideal for covering a larger part of the estate in one to two hours.
  • Watch the endemic birds from the viewpoints, overlooking Mahébourg bay.
  • Try the sunset safari to see the valley in a different light.

The panoramic restaurant and the farm

Beyond the trails, Vallée de Ferney offers several food and learning stops:

  • Stop at the Ferney Falaise Rouge restaurant, overlooking Grand Port bay and facing Lion Mountain.
  • Enjoy local cuisine made with seasonal produce from the estate’s gardens and nearby farms, in the spirit of Mauritian gastronomy.
  • Discover the endemic plant nursery, at the heart of the reforestation programme.
  • Join the farm immersion, a one-hour guided visit among exotic flowers, coffee plants, vanilla and vegetable gardens.

Good to know: Vallée de Ferney can be visited all year round, but go in the morning and dress for the occasion (closed shoes, water, sun protection). The endemic forest stays humid throughout the year, and trails can get slippery after rain. Children love the 4×4 tour, often easier than a long hike in the Mauritian tropical heat.

Our guide to things to do in Mauritius completes the picture for a tour of the whole country.

Understanding conservation in Mauritius

Mauritius has some of the most threatened island ecosystems in the world. Before colonisation, forest covered most of the island; today, good-quality native forest covers less than 2% of its land, the rest having given way to sugar cane, plantations and urban growth.

River and endemic forest in Vallée de Ferney, Mauritius

Vallée de Ferney is one of the country’s most visible conservation efforts, alongside the Black River Gorges National Park in the south-west. Together, these sites protect the last refuges of Mauritius’ endemic biodiversity.

Visitors who venture here leave with a new way to discover Mauritius: beyond the lagoon and the hotels, a country aware of how fragile its natural heritage is.

This ecological side also appeals to expats and investors looking for a lifestyle closer to nature. Mauritian culture itself is rooted in this strong bond between people and their environment, something you rediscover every time you explore a protected site like Ferney.

According to the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, conservation projects carried out at Ferney and in other reserves have saved several endemic species from extinction, including the Mauritius kestrel.

As our team at MJ Développement puts it, “Vallée de Ferney shows a side of the island travellers don’t always expect: a country that looks after its natural heritage as carefully as its beaches”.

The south-east: lifestyle and relocation projects

Every year, the south-east attracts new visitors and expats with its unspoilt nature, its peace and quiet and its hidden beaches, such as Blue Bay. Vallée de Ferney captures this spirit well: less busy than the north or the west, the south-east keeps an authentic feel, ideal for a few extra nights away from it all before heading back to the airport.

For buyers who prefer the north or the west of the island, our residences remain easy to reach. You can, for example, discover the contemporary villas of Mythic Villas in Grand Gaube, designed for tropical family living, about 1 hour 30 minutes’ drive from Vallée de Ferney.

Our favourite: a morning at Vallée de Ferney, lunch at the Ferney Falaise Rouge restaurant, then a late-afternoon swim at Blue Bay. This trio sums up what the south-east of Mauritius has to offer: unspoilt nature, local food and a turquoise lagoon. It is one of the days we most often recommend to clients visiting the area.

Many of our buyers tell us their attachment to Mauritius began in a place like Vallée de Ferney: a moment out of time, untouched nature, the feeling of having found an island that is still genuine.

If you have had that experience too, our advisers take it from there: choosing the property, schemes open to foreigners, taxation, life on the island. One conversation is enough to lay the groundwork, and investing in Mauritius with MJ Développement becomes a clear, well-guided process!
