In the heart of northern Mauritius, Château de Labourdonnais invites you on a journey back in time. This carefully restored 19th-century colonial house stands in the middle of a large estate planted with mango and lychee trees and spices.
A rum distillery, a restaurant, a shop and fruit orchards make it one of the essential visits for discovering Mauritius beyond the lagoon, around fifteen minutes from our resort in Grand Gaube, Mythic Suites & Villas.
At MJ Développement, a property developer in Mauritius, we often recommend this estate to our clients as a way into Mauritian history.

Château de Labourdonnais and its history
Château de Labourdonnais was built in the mid-19th century by the Wiehe family, on a large agricultural estate in the north of the island. Its name pays tribute to Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, the French governor of the former Isle de France.
The colonnaded house, with its veranda, high ceilings and original parquet floors, is a fine illustration of Mauritian colonial architecture.

After a long restoration, the estate reopened to the public. Today you walk through drawing rooms furnished in period style, the bedrooms, the kitchen and the verandas that look out over the orchards.
Every room tells the story of a great planter family, between farming, Creole society and European influences. The whole remains one of the finest surviving examples of built heritage in Mauritius, well worth seeing during a stay in the north.
The estate: orchards, distillery and dining
Beyond the house, the estate stands out for the wealth of its crops and activities. It is easy to spend half a day here, between a walk in the orchards, a rum tasting and lunch at La Table du Château.
Here are the highlights to discover on site.
The fruit orchards of Château de Labourdonnais
The orchards bring together more than a hundred varieties of tropical trees, several of them endemic or heritage varieties:
- Wander the avenues of mango trees, lychees, citrus and breadfruit.
- Discover the spices grown on site: vanilla, cinnamon, turmeric and pepper.
- Taste ripe fruit turned straight into jams and sorbets.
- Rest under the great banyan trees, a century old, that line the main avenues.
The distillery and the estate restaurant
The Château de Labourdonnais distillery produces its own rums, in white, amber, spiced and fruit-infused expressions made with produce from the estate. The tour explains how the cane is processed and how the rums are aged in casks, before a guided tasting. To put these bottles in context, our guide to Mauritian rum sets out the main families of rum on the island.
A few steps away, La Table du Château serves refined Creole cuisine based on estate produce and house recipes. A shop selling rums, jams and gifts completes the experience.
Good to know: book your lunch at La Table du Château in advance, especially in high season. The menu changes with the harvests, and the desserts made with orchard fruit are among the best food memories of the day. The distillery also runs guided tours, which pair well with the house itself for a full, coherent morning.
Practical information for your visit
Château de Labourdonnais is easy to visit all year round. Here are the useful markers for planning your trip:
- Opening hours: open daily, generally from 9am to 5pm (hours may vary by season).
- Address: Mapou, Rivière du Rempart district, northern Mauritius.
- Admission: several options exist, with or without a guide. Check the estate’s official website for current prices.

Our favourite moment: a walk in the orchards in late morning, when the avenues are still cool and the estate quiet. Finish with a Creole lunch at La Table du Château, then a coffee on the veranda facing the grounds. It is one of our team’s favourite outings when we host buyers and want them to experience Mauritian history beyond the postcards.
