Live in Mauritius

10 key steps to move in

01

Prepare the ground : before you leave, remember to cancel all your contracts and services: telephone, postal subscriptions, alarm, etc. Some of them require advance notice, so do not linger!

02

Get your finances in order: close your credit accounts and make sure you pay off all your debts. A fresh start deserves a clean slate!

03

Get rid of the superfluous: sort through and sell everything you can. Pack only furniture and essential items that are worth the cost of transportation.

04

Organise your transit: shipping your belongings can take time, so send them in advance for hassle-free installation.

05

Prepare for a stress-free arrival: choose a moving professional who specialises in chartering and preparing your goods for customs clearance.

06

Stay connected: once on the island, buy a local SIM card to be able to stay in touch with your loved ones and reassure them.

07

Explore your new neighbourhood: take the time to discover the surroundings, find the essential shops and make yourself at home.

08

Express unpacking: unpack the essentials first and create a functional space to adapt to your new surroundings.

09

Take care of paperwork: Make sure all necessary documents are in order and that you are registered with all necessary local services

10

Make friends: organise a small evening or lunch with your new neighbours or friends to mark the start of a new chapter!

A quality
education

Children’s education is a crucial aspect to consider before moving abroad. Mauritius offers a range of educational options to suit all expectations. Education is free, from kindergarten to university, with a system based on the British model, which promotes bilingualism among the majority of Mauritians. From primary school onwards, schools also offer a number of optional languages such as Mandarin, Urdu and Hindi. For those looking for an international educational program, the island has many international schools with curricula similar to those of European establishments, as well as private schools offering a variety of teaching approaches.

The range of extracurricular activities on offer is also extremely varied. Children can take part in activities such as dancing, team sports, swimming, horse riding, martial arts, plastic arts, scouting, theatre or even music, allowing them to develop a multitude of skills and talents.

A state-of-the-art
healthcare system

Moving to a foreign country also means learning about the health system. In Mauritius, the healthcare system is generally of a high standard, with many doctors and specialists trained mostly in European countries. Health care is split between the public and private sectors, offering comprehensive services to residents, expatriates and tourists.

The public sector includes several regional hospitals across the island, offering free care covering almost all pathologies, including specialised cancer and cardiology centres. On the other hand, private care is provided in modern, fee-paying clinics.

Insurers offer a wide range of cover for accidents, illnesses and disabilities. Health insurance generally works with two types of coverage: hospital care (in-patient) and outpatient care (out-patient). Each insurance company offers different types of coverage, but all include these two essential aspects.

Your fur babies can come along
for the trip!

Animal lovers know that leaving the country without their little ones is out of the question. Well, the good news is that it is possible to have your pet repatriated to Mauritius. However, a permit is required and the process can be lengthy, as the country is very vigilant about controlling certain diseases such as rabies. As such, you should apply 3 to 6 months before departure. Several tests will be required, so start the process well in advance.

Do not forget to:

apply to the veterinary service of the Ministry of Agriculture in Mauritius. Make sure you have all the documents required to obtain the import permit, including the animal’s health certificate.

confirm the arrival of the animal with the quarantine service two days before your departure: your pet will be placed in quarantine for a few days (between 5 days and a month). Accommodation and food are at your expense.
