Le Morne Brabant rises above the southwest coast of Mauritius at an altitude of 556 meters. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this mountain attracts visitors from around the world every year.

Between hiking its scenic trails, relaxing on one of the Indian Ocean’s most beautiful beaches, and discovering a deeply moving history, Le Morne is a must-see destination during any stay in Mauritius.

Le Morne Brabant: A UNESCO-Listed Natural Treasure

Le Morne Brabant has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. This recognition honors the mountain’s historical significance as a refuge for runaway slaves during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Protected by steep cliffs and dense vegetation, these men and women found a natural sanctuary there. The caves and rocky overhangs of Le Morne Brabant served as hiding places from colonial authorities.

Today, Le Morne remains a powerful symbol of resistance to slavery in the Indian Ocean. Oral tradition has preserved this memory across generations in Mauritius. Every February 1st, Abolition Day, a national public holiday, commemorates the end of slavery on this very site. It is also believed that sega, Mauritius’ traditional music rooted in African and Malagasy heritage, was born on these lands.

What to Do at Le Morne?

Hiking, beach time, kitesurfing—there is no shortage of activities at Le Morne Brabant. Here are some highlights worth experiencing during your stay in the southwest of Mauritius.

Hiking Le Morne Brabant

The Le Morne Brabant hike is an essential experience during any trip to the island. The marked trail winds through lush vegetation where endemic species thrive, including Trochetia Boutoniana, the national flower of Mauritius.

Allow around 3 to 4 hours round trip to reach the summit at 556 meters above sea level. The breathtaking views over the lagoon and peninsula more than reward the effort, making this hike one of the highlights of any Mauritian getaway.

Good to know: access to the summit of Le Morne Brabant is controlled by a gate and requires a certified guide, so be sure to book your guide in advance.

Enjoy the Beach and Lagoon

It is hard not to be captivated by Le Morne Beach. The sand is soft, the lagoon glows turquoise, and the water remains shallow for dozens of meters. Visitors come here to swim, snorkel, or simply relax.

Families vacationing in Mauritius particularly appreciate this shallow lagoon, sheltered from strong currents.

It is also off this beach that the famous “underwater waterfall” phenomenon, visible from the air, fascinates travelers from all over the world.

Kitesurfing and Water Sports

The lagoon at Le Morne is world-renowned for kitesurfing. Its steady winds and flat waters attract enthusiasts and travelers of all skill levels.

Several schools offer lessons directly on site. Windsurfing and paddleboarding also complement the range of water sports available along this stretch of Mauritius’ southwest coast.

The MJ Développement team’s tip: to make the most of Le Morne Brabant, plan for a full day. Start your hike early in the morning while temperatures are still cool, then enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the beach. Legend Hill Resort & Spa and Marguery Villas, located in Black River, are only 15 minutes by car from the foot of the mountain.

What Biodiversity Can You Discover at Le Morne?

Le Morne Brabant is classified as a nature reserve, and for good reason.

It is home to the Trochetia Boutoniana, a rare flower that has become the national emblem of Mauritius. It grows in only a few places across the island, and the slopes of Le Morne are among them.

Beyond this iconic flower, the mountain shelters several endemic plant species protected by conservation programs. Tropical birds nest within the dense vegetation covering its slopes, delighting nature lovers traveling through Mauritius.

Offshore, the lagoon is equally remarkable: coral reefs support a rich underwater ecosystem, easily explored while snorkeling from one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. And then there is the geological curiosity visible only from the sky: the famous “underwater waterfall”, an optical illusion created by shifting sand currents off the coast of Le Morne. It is one of Mauritius’ most shared images.
